CHRISTOFLE - "EMPIRE" Model (GRATEBOESSE). 12-piece silver plated fish cutlery set (12 forks and 12 knives/spoons, for a total of 24 pieces). Handles feature a neoclassical design of palmettes and water leaves, ending in gadroons and knobs. Includes lozenges embellished with scrolls and small flowers; the interior of the lozenges features the “gratteboessé” finish. Blades feature incised dolphin motifs. The fork tines are decorated with incised intertwined scrolls. Hallmarks of the silversmith’s workshop: (“CC” and scales), used between 1844 and 1935 (handles and blades) Signatures in full: "CHRISTOFLE" L: 19.5 and 22.5 cm. In 2 anti-tarnish pouches and a black leather-lined case for 12 serving knives. The case lid bears the initials "PR" (shows signs of use) Case dimensions: H: 4.3 cm. L: 24 cm. W: 17 cm. Produced over a period of about 5 years, between 1908 and 1913, this is a rare model in the company’s production. The technique known as “gratteboessé” was intended to create a matte finish within each diamond pattern. However, this model did not achieve the expected success and was therefore replaced by the “Malmaison” model (which is still produced today).
