CHRISTOFLE - "EMPIRE" Model (GRATEBOESSE). - Lot 69
CHRISTOFLE - "EMPIRE" Model (GRATEBOESSE). Set of 3 salt cellars and their shovels in silver plated metal in a shuttle shape, with white crystal interiors. Each salt cellar features a neoclassical design of lozenges, foliage, small flowers, and palmettes. They rest on circular, ringed bases. The backs of the spatulas (salt scoops) form a diamond shape embellished with scrolls and small flowers; the interiors of the diamonds feature the so-called “gratteboessé” finish. Hallmarks of the silversmith’s workshop: (“CC” and scales), used between 1844 and 1935. Signatures in full: “CHRISTOFLE.” Dimensions of salt cellars: H: 2.5 cm. L: 8.1 cm. D: 4.5 cm. Interior dimensions: H: 1.8 cm / L: 7 cm / W: 4 cm Length of scoops: 9 cm. Produced over a period of approximately 5 years, between 1908 and 1913, this is a rare model in the company’s production. The technique known as “gratteboessé” was intended to create a matte finish inside each diamond. However, this model did not achieve the expected success and was therefore replaced by the “Malmaison” model (which is still produced today).
