NORTHERN FRANCE school, circa 1520. - Lot 240
NORTHERN FRANCE school, circa 1520. "Noli Me Tangere"; "Donateurs avec saint Jean et leurs filles"; "Donateurs, none et saint Pierre". Triptych, panel. Height: 64.5 cm Width : 106 cm Central panel: 50 x 35.8cm (when viewed) / Side panels: 47.5 x 17.3cm (when viewed) Lot on display with the expert until June 13, 2025 The day after the Passion, the holy women go to Christ's tomb to embalm him. Mary Madeleine sees a man near the tomb and initially mistakes him for the gardener. This is why, in many Nordic paintings of the 16th century, Christ is shown as a gardener with a shovel and, here, with a straw hat of the trades working outdoors. The axe visible on the outer shutters is probably a telling weapon, in other words, it evokes the name of the family the name of the family who commissioned this triptych. Expert: Stéphane Pinta, Cabinet Turquin.
