C J BONNET LYON (woven by Chatel and Tassinari) - Lot 88
C J BONNET LYON (woven by Chatel and Tassinari) "Galloping horse or allegory of commercial liberty" Silk tapestry depicting a galloping racehorse ridden by a jockey. The sashes bear the words "libre échange" (free trade), no doubt echoing the "Codben-Chevalier" Franco-British trade treaty signed on January 23, 1860 between the French Empire and the United Kingdom. This galloping racehorse has been the emblem of Soieries Bonnet since 1871. According to E Leroudier, this was the first advertising trademark woven under the Second Empire for this major Lyonnais manufacturer. Bibl: E LEROUDIER, "Les tableaux tissés de la Fabrique lyonnaise". Lyon, 1922 (Cat. no. 12) 40 x 60 cm.
