CROWNED CHILD VIRGIN - Lot 123
CROWNED CHILD VIRGIN MERIDIONAL CHAMPAIGN (TROYES?), TOWARDS 1520 Statue of crowned Virgin in small nature. The Virgin Mother carries the Child on her right hip, in the fold of her apron coat. Polychrome and gilded limestone. Dim. H. 93 cm. (Worn polychromy. Missing the left hands of the Virgin and Child and the attribute in the right hand. Wooden wreath brought back to replace the original one.) Provenance: private oratory. Expert; Raphaële SKUPIEN The qualities of beauty and elegance tinged with picturesque of this unpublished Virgin and Child make it one of the most remarkable witnesses of the Champagne sculpture of the beginning of the 16th century. Dressed in the fashion of the time in a V-necked dress under a gold-patterned coat, the young mother holds her son against her right hip while offering him to the believers' gaze. The melancholy expression of her gaze, which accompanies the movement of her head slightly tilted forward, seems to tell of the Passion to come. The anecdotal detail of her locks of hair, which spread out over her arms and down her back under the short veil with its embossed, golden edge, held in place by a wreath (once made of stone, as suggested by the circular terrace with its anchor point), does not detract from its gravity. It is thus similar to the large crowned virgins at Le Rouvroy (Paris, Musée du Louvre, R.F. 1386), Villenauxe-la-Grande (Troyes, Musée des Beaux-Arts), which measure more than 1.50 m, and the smaller ones kept at the Musée de Cluny (Cl. 18789) and the Louvre (R.F. 801). Like the latter, she brings the right side of her coat up against her left arm, creating a wide fold in the apron in which, against all probability, the Child seems to sit. The drapes that fall straight in broken folds mark the difference. Our crowned Virgin is distinguished by an additional grace, through a bodily gesture of restraint that contrasts with the vivacity of the Child in an attitude comparable
