FOLLOWER OF THOMAS SCHWANTHALER (1634-1707) - Lot 120
FOLLOWER OF THOMAS SCHWANTHALER (1634-1707) SAINT ROCH AND THE DOG CENTRAL EUROPE (TYROL), END OF THE XVII DECEMBER CENTURY Carved group in wood (lime?) polychrome, sketched back; altarpiece element. Total height: 90 cm. (Some cracks and accidents to the polychrome, traces of an attack of xylophagous insects now treated. Missing the right hand and the bumblebee. The shoulder is restored). The statue represents Saint Roch in the guise of a young nobleman accompanied by his herald. His triumphant gait, supported by the swirl of the drapes, the ample gestures and the determined step, makes us forget his wounded thigh; it evokes the baroque art of Central Europe. It can be compared to a sculpture project of the same subject drawn and watercoloured by Thomas Schwanthaler in 1672. The structure of this group, whose carefully sketched back reveals the body of the hound, suggests that Saint Roch and the feeding dog were sheltered in a niche in a monumental altarpiece of the frons scenae type.
